Learn or Teach the History and Fashion of Colonial America

The American Colonial Era is a fascinating history for young and old alike. It spans centuries from the early European colonization of America to 1776 when independence was declared from Britain. Kids love coloring, and when you combine coloring and history, you can catch their attention more than just relating dry historical facts.

Below is a collection of free colonial American coloring pages as well as coloring books of different aspects of the era. Kids can learn about the fashion of the era, the different types of work people did, what everyday life was like and meet famous personalities of the colonial period.

Free Coloring Pages from the Plimoth Plantation Site

The Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is a living history indoor and outdoor combination of museum and interactive exhibit that tells the story of the Plymouth Colony.

Many of the coloring pages available at the site include Felix the Mayflower kitten and are from the children's story Felix and His Mayflower II Adventures.

Colonial Fashion Coloring Pages

The fashions of the time are much more varied than the Puritan garb the early settlers are known for. These two coloring books definitely aren't just for kids.

Both of the authors, Peter Copeland and Tom Tierney, have carefully researched the history to create authentic pictures of the colonial period. Copeland's coloring book focuses on the Revolutionary War period and Tierney's illustrations span 150 years of history from the Puritans to the later colonial period. Paper doll fans may recognize Tierney as the artist of many historically accurate paper doll books.

Early American Trades

Here is another coloring book by Peter Copeland from Dover Publications. This one is 48 pages and depicts some of the trades of the colonial period. Are you trying to teach children what people did for a living during this period? This would be a fun way to get them interested. Some of the trades include wig makers, hatters and glassblowers and more.
