Hunting and Shooting Groups for Women

Women and Guns
Shooting and hunting aren't just for men. In fact, more women are becoming interested in learning to use guns for personal protection and hunting. But not all of us grew up learning how to use guns and sometimes have preconceived notions of hunting groups being boys clubs. Below are groups and other resources that focus on helping women to learn firearms skills in a supportive environment.
The National Rifle Association's Women On Target Program
The NRA is the largest gun rights organization in America. They realize the importance of drawing more women into shooting sports. They provide training through their Women on Target program in shooting clinics across the country which can include instruction in shotguns, handguns, rifles, and archery depending on the clinic.
The clinics usually run several hours and are inexpensive. The most I've paid for an all-day class was $25 and that included a meal. However, this will depend on your location. The NRA also hosts hunting trips for women.
If you want to learn more, read my review of my first clinic experience with the NRA Women on Target Program. This article will give you more info on what to expect and has relevant links to help you find a local shooting clinic.
Becoming an Outdoors Woman
Becoming an Outdoors Woman (or BOW for short) was initially sponsored by the University of Wisconsin in 1991 but has grown to providing instruction around the USA and other countries. Along with shooting skills, women have the option to learn many outdoor activities including camping, fishing and hiking. To find a course near you, visit the Becoming an Outdoors-Woman website.
The Appleseed Project
This project is sponsored by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association and the goal is to teach Americans the early heritage of their country as well as traditional rifle skills.
Women shoot free at all Appleseed events as well as children under 21. They conduct shooting boot camps around the US. I think learning rifle skills in an atmosphere that encourages people to remember the origins of the rights so many of us take for granted is an excellent idea. To learn more and find a shooting event near you, visit the Appleseed Project website.
Other Shooting Resources
Your local conservation club is an excellent place to practice shooting and find hunter's safety courses. Some parks also have shooting ranges. Both of these generally charge a nominal fee to use the range or you can choose to purchase a membership if you plan on practicing a lot.
Your state office of the Department of Natural Resource is another place to find local instruction. In fact, some of them have teamed up with BOW and have listings for classes on their websites. Just do an internet search for your state DNR and check out what activities they have to offer.
Opportunities for Women
Women and girls of different age groups are just as excited about learning hunting and shooting as men and boys are. These groups are just some of the resources that help women become more proficient in the use of firearms. Take advantage of them. It's never too late to learn something new.
