How to Make Your Own Tinted Moisturizer

The Benefits of Tinted Moisturizers
Sure, there are some excellent tinted moisturizers out there, but sometimes you don't have one on hand and just want a touch of foundation. It's easy to make your own with liquid foundation and moisturizer.
This technique helps give you even coverage and saves you from spending cash on tinted moisturizers that you might only use once in a while. It's also a bit of a dollar stretcher when you're running out of foundation and don't have the time or cash to stop at the store.
Tinted moisturizers are popular especially in the summer when women don't always want heavier coverage. After a day at the beach or outdoor exercise, they give you just a hint of color that you need to look and feel pulled together without the fuss of a full makeup application.
Mineral makeup is great for quick makeup application too, and I use that alternately with liquid foundation. This article will focus on liquid foundations however as some people have problems with mineral makeup drying their skin.
How to Make Your Own Tinted Moisturizer
It's pretty much a no-brainer. Just mix your favorite foundation and moisturizer together and apply to the skin. Here are some tips to make the application appear flawless:
- Use small amounts of each at first to see how well the mixture spreads on your skin.
- Mix the two together until they are completely blended.
- Premixed moisturizers are known for having sunblock properties, so make sure that either your foundation or moisturizer has sunblock, preferably both.
- Dot the mixture all over your face and just under the chin.
- Blend with a moistened makeup sponge lightly as you would with regular foundation.
Powder Pulls it All Together
Translucent powder is the perfect ending to this technique. It tones down any oily spots and gives you extra coverage without looking too cakey as long as it's applied correctly. Just make sure to shake excess powder off the brush or other applicator before you put the powder on your face and you should be all set.
Choosing the Right Foundation
Many women want so much to cover what they consider their problem areas that they choose foundation that is too light or too dark. They think that if it's different than their skin tone, then it will act like a mask to cover up what they don't like. This simply isn't true.
The wrong color foundation only enhances problem areas. Haven't we all seen women we thought had a serious case of orange poisoning when it was makeup that had been poorly chosen and poorly applied? Try to match the foundation to your skin tone as much as possible and apply it correctly to get the most coverage.
I prefer to apply liquid foundation with a slightly damp makeup sponge in dots all over my face instead of smearing it on. I've tried it with my fingers, and it just turns out too blotchy.
When I've mixed my own tinted moisturizer, I haven't had a problem with the color being too light. It's the same color as the foundation but just a lighter amount of coverage.
Be Safe
Remember, if you're outdoors a lot, then moisturizer and makeup with sunblock just don't cut it for true sun protection. You will need to apply regular sunblock and take other steps to protect your skin, i.e. hat, visors, etc.
That's it. Easy as pie as they say. If you want a little bit of coverage but don't feel like running out and buying another makeup product, making your own tinted moisturizer is the perfect solution.
